Misfits-Test Question

Discuss the ways in which the extract constructs the representation of age using sound.

In the extract of Misfits i watched it constructs the representation of age using sound. This is shown descretly through the language the teenages use and there aggressive behaviour towards eachother. The music played at the start of the extract is like rock music, this gives the feel that the teenagers are mischeviuos, take drugs and drink alcohol, this is very stereotypical.
When the group turn to the boy who says he can turn invisible the music gets very creepy and mysterious, this is non-diagetic sound and is used to build tension. Alot of sound effects have been added in when they talk about having superpowers, or when trying to use them. These sounds are unrealistic and seem as if theyve been purposly put in to make it more obvious of the use of having special powers.

Romeo and Juliet - Test Question

How are the two gangs represented in the initial scene of Romeo and Juliet?

Camera Angles
When the Capulets first arrive and step out of their car you can only see a close up shot of their feet. All the shots of when they first arrive are low ground shots, meaning their faces are not visable. This represents them as mysterious and unknown, at first.During the fight between the Capulets and the Montagues, there is a extreme close up of two characters from each of the two gangs. This close up is of their eyes, this shows the anger in each of their eyes. However this is more apparent in Tybolts (from the Capulets) eyes as he is percieved as more powerful. The close up of Benvolios eyes, shows he is more of a coward. Tybolt is shown as more powerfull as their is some high angle shots making him look higher than the other characters, from the angle its shot at, suggesting he is more superiour. A point of view shot has also been used, this was when Tybolt was looking through his gun to shoot a member of the Montague gang. This makes the audience feel as if they are that character and can see whats going on from there point of view. This also represents the Capulets gang as more powerful because they kill a member from the other gang.

Editing
When the two gangs are arguing there is lots of quick editing, switching between different shots, this shows that the argument is getting heated and it builds up the tension for the viewer. This represents the two gangs as being argumentative and fiesty. When they start to argue and show eachother their guns, it zooms in o the guns, showing the gang names on each of the guns. This shows the two gangs ca be violent as they're carrying guns around with them. The shots look asif they've been recorded on a hand held device because theyre jolty and bumpy shots. This makes it feel more real to the viewer and not as staged. When Benvolio has his gun out the focus is always on his face and the gun is more out of focus, this represents Benvolio as a character that does'nt want to use his gun, suggesting he is a coward and does'nt want to fight. Towards the end of the fight when Tybolt drps his cigarette its in slow motion, this is to emphasise the fact he has just dropped the cigarette in a gas station where it could potentially be set alight, which it does.

Rocky VI

Discuss the ways in which the extract constructs representations of nationality and gender using the following:

• Camera shots, angles, movement and composition
• Editing
• Sound
• Mise-en-scene
The extract constructs representation of nationality and gender through using mise-en-scene. The facial expressions between the two characters Draco (Russian) and Rocky (American) are very different from eachother. Draco's facial expressions vary from angry to emotionless, this shows how masculine he is and how serious about fighting and training he is.
The extract constructs representation of nationality and gender through using editing. The editing switches between the two characters/nationalitys very quickly. This is very effective as it looks as if they are competing together, when theyre actually in different countries. Draco, the russian, uses very 'modern' equipment for training, this is very opposite to Rocky, the american, who uses 'natural' ways of training. He picks up logs instead of weights, cuts down trees and runs up moutains.
The extract constructs representation of nationality and gender through using camera shots, angles, movement and composition. The camera shots are often zoomed in on a certain parts of their body when they are training, to show their masculine body and muscles. There is also long shots to show more of there surroundings to understand their background. An example of this is when Rocky is climbing the mountain, using long shots and extreme long shots to emphasise the size of him compared to the mountain.
